Is this a standalone?
Yes. It's a complete story with a real ending and no cliffhanger. It's the first book in a connected world, but nothing is left hanging. Most readers go straight to the next one anyway.
How spicy is it, really?

🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Spice 4 of 5, explicit

A 4. Most of the book is pure tension: stolen looks, dark hallways and things that almost happen. When it finally does happen, it's explicit and it hits hard. Less nonstop than our 5s, hotter than you'd expect.
How long does shipping take?

A little peek inside

Seven days before my sister's wedding, her fiancé put his hand over my mouth in the dark and told me not to scream.

The lights had gone out in the middle of the toast. One second my father was raising his glass to Adriana and Nico Marchetti, the next the whole ballroom was black and someone near the kitchen doors was shouting in Russian.

I didn't see Nico move. I only felt him. An arm around my waist, a wall of warm suit against my back, and then I was being pulled through a door I didn't know existed into a room that smelled like cedar and fur coats.

"Quiet," he breathed against my ear. "They're not here for your father. They're here for you."

I should have fought him. Every girl in this family is raised knowing exactly what men like Nico are. The youngest Don in New York. The man my father calls a necessary evil when he thinks the doors are closed.

But his hand wasn't hurting me. It was shaking.

Outside, footsteps. Two sets. Slow and careful, checking doors. Nico shifted, putting his whole body between me and the handle, and I felt the gun at his hip press into my side.

The footsteps passed. His hand slid from my mouth. He didn't step back.

For a long moment neither of us moved. I could feel his heart hammering through his shirt, as fast as mine. Men like him aren't supposed to have hearts that do that.

"Why would anyone want me?" I whispered. "I'm nobody. I'm the good one. I wear pink and I sit where I'm told."

"You're the one I look at," he said. "And people noticed."

Somewhere down the hall, my sister was calling his name. I could hear the panic in it. I could also hear my own heartbeat, which was much louder, and much worse.

"You're marrying Adriana on Saturday," I said.

"Am I?"

His thumb found my jaw in the dark. Not rough. Almost careful. Like he'd imagined doing it so many times he was afraid to get it wrong.

"Nico. Go to her."

"Ask me why I agreed to this marriage, Elena."

I shouldn't have. I knew it the way you know a step is missing before your foot comes down. I asked anyway.

"Because the contract your father signed doesn't say Adriana," he said, very slowly. "It says his daughter. He never wrote down which one."

My breath stopped. His forehead dropped against mine.

"I've spent three months pretending I didn't care which. I'm done pretending. On Saturday I'm going to stand at that altar and tell him he gave me the wrong sister."

Before I could answer, the lights came back on.

And the door swung open, and my father was standing there with a gun in his hand.

Where it takes you

Old New York families. A war nobody names.

The place

New York, where the old Italian families run the city from behind restaurant doors and every Sunday dinner is a negotiation.

The rules

Daughters are promised, not asked. Loyalty is inherited. And you never look twice at the man promised to your sister.

The cost

One wrong look across the table can start a war. She's already given him several.

Who you're about to fall for

Nico

Nico

The youngest Don in New York. Engaged to the wrong sister.

Cold, controlled and feared by every man in the room. He agreed to marry one sister. He can't take his eyes off the other. The most jealous hero you'll ever read.
Elena

Elena

The good daughter. Until him.

Sweet, polite and always in pink. The daughter who never breaks a rule. She's not supposed to want her sister's fiancé. She wants him anyway.

They finished it at 3am too

I kept seeing this all over my feed and finally caved. I hadn't finished a book since my second kid was born. I finished this one in two nights. The dinner scenes alone had me holding my breath, and he barely even touches her. My husband asked why I kept going to bed so early.

Nico is ice cold to every single person in that city except her, and that's the whole reason I couldn't put it down. The way he handles anyone who disrespects her is ridiculous and I loved every second. Only complaint: the slow burn in the middle nearly killed me. Completely worth it.

I'm a spice first reader and almost skipped this because everyone said slow burn. Glad I didn't. The waiting makes it hit ten times harder, and when it finally happens it's properly explicit. It showed up in 6 days with tracking the whole way, and the paperback looks even better in person.

I expected a sweet doormat heroine. Elena is not that. She's polite to everyone, then says the one thing nobody in that family dares to say to him. Watching him realize he's met his match was my favorite part. It came in a plain box, which I appreciated since my kids open every package.

Between work and the kids, reading is the only hour of the day that's just mine, and this book made that hour feel like a vacation. Forbidden, jealous, dramatic, two people pretending they don't care. I bought two more copies for my book club and we haven't stopped talking about it.

Dark romance usually scares me off, so this was my test. It's intense and the spice is real, but it never felt like shock for no reason. Underneath it's a real love story. He softens only for her, she gets braver because of him. I already ordered the next one.

Read it if...

  • Off limits only makes you want it more
  • You want a man who'd burn the city down for her
  • You love a slow burn that's worth the wait
  • You love watching the good girl stop being good
  • You need a book that steals your whole evening
