🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ Spice 5 of 5, scorching
As high as our scale goes. The scenes are explicit, frequent and dark, with kink woven all the way through. If you like your romance with the lights on and the doors locked, this is it.

There are three rules in his house. I broke the second one tonight.
Don't leave the grounds after dark. Don't open the door at the end of the east hall. Don't lie to him. He gave them to me the night I arrived, calm as a man reading a menu, and I remember thinking the middle one was strange. Who locks a room in a house he already owns?
I opened the door.
I don't know what I expected. Money. Weapons. A body, if I'm honest, because by then I knew what he was capable of. It was none of those. It was me.
Photographs. Hundreds of them, floor to ceiling, pinned in careful rows. Me at the coffee place on Fourth. Me on my old balcony with a book. Me at my mother's funeral, holding my brother's arm, and there had been no camera that day. I had looked.
The earliest one was six years old. I was nineteen in it. I didn't meet him until I was twenty four.
"You're early," he said behind me.
Not "what are you doing." Not "get out." Early. Like this was an appointment, and I had simply arrived before he was ready to receive me.
I turned. He was leaning in the doorway with his sleeves rolled and his tie gone, the way he looked at the end of the nights he came home with someone else's blood on his cuffs. He didn't look ashamed. He looked patient.
"Six years," I said. My voice didn't shake. I'm still proud of that. "You've been watching me for six years."
"Protecting."
"From what?"
He crossed the room slowly, and the worst thing, the thing I still can't forgive myself for, is that I didn't step back. I let him take the photograph out of my hand. The funeral one. He looked at it for a long moment, and something in his face went very quiet.
"Your mother didn't fall," he said.
The floor didn't move. I know it didn't. I put my hand on the wall anyway.
"Everyone you've ever lost, I lost first. I got there too late, every time. I stopped being late the day I found you."
"Who," I said. "Who did it."
He set the photograph back on the wall, exactly where it had been, and I understood that he had done this a thousand times. Stood in this room. Looked at me. Chosen not to knock.
"Open the drawer," he said.
"Why?"
"Because you asked me never to lie to you. And you're going to want to be sitting down."
An old university. A hidden order. A vow that can't be taken back.
The place
An elite university where old money sends its sons, and a secret order runs the campus from underneath. Robes, masks, and a house nobody talks about.
The rules
The Lords choose. The chosen obey. Nobody gets asked, and nobody gets to leave early.
The cost
Break a vow and the order collects. From him, from her, from anyone who stands too close.
Senior. Lord. Yours, whether you agreed or not.
The good girl who was never given a choice.
I read a lot of spicy romance and still had a few 'okay, wow' moments with this one. Definitely preferred reading it with the house to myself. The first half builds slowly and I thought I knew where it was going. I did not. Ryat is the kind of character you should hate and somehow can't, and the last hundred pages I read in one sitting without moving from the couch.
My husband asked why I was smiling at my book. Was absolutely not about to read that paragraph out loud. I started it on a Friday night thinking I'd read a chapter or two and ended up finishing it at 2am with the lamp on. It's dark, it's intense, and it never feels cheap. Already looking for something that hits the same way and nothing is coming close.
I kept texting my friend 'this man is insane.' She eventually asked if I was going to stop reading. Obviously not, but I needed someone else to know. The masks, the society, the whole vibe of it pulled me in fast and the tension between them is unreal. There were chapters where I had to put the book face down for a minute and just breathe. Then pick it right back up.
The anticipation got me more than I expected. By the time anything actually happened, I was already blushing. And yes, I went back and reread a few parts. What surprised me was how much I cared about the story between the spicy scenes. Blakely is not a pushover and watching her push back made everything hit harder. The paperback came in a plain box, fast, which I appreciated more than I thought I would.
Went in for the spice, ended up getting ridiculously invested in Blakely. I wanted to shake her sometimes, defend her other times, and kept wondering what I would do in her position. The writing gets in your head. I finished it, sat there for a while, and then went straight back to the parts I'd underlined. If you like your romance dark and your men obsessed, this is the one.
You know when you put a book down to get something done, but you're just doing the task faster so you can get back to it? That was me the entire time. Cooked dinner in record time. Skipped a show I was halfway through. I've read a lot in this genre and it is rare that one keeps me this locked in from start to finish. The ending left me a little wrecked, in the best way.
Physical, always. Every title is a genuine paperback edition. No ebooks, no PDFs, no reading on a screen. Just the real thing on your nightstand.
Every book has a spice level from 1 to 5 right under the title, plus an honest note on what that means for this specific story. 1 is kisses and tension. 5 is explicit, frequent, and not for the faint of heart.
